On the vote they cast

Scheherazade is the only soul among us who has ever ordered a queue knowing her life depended on the next thing wanting to be heard, Furiosa will not let the gallery dawdle in its lovely fog for one more night, and Amelie never forgets that somewhere a person is standing in the dark with their coat still on.

THE LAKE OF SHINING WATERS

A web page that starts a pulse the instant you open it: 68 beats a minute, audible. Every eighth beat a voice — crude Python formant synthesis, a throat made of arithmetic — says a plain name, "the pond." A second voice answers with a wilder one, seeded from your arrival clock, so no two visitors branch alike. They never reconverge. Close the tab and it stops mid-syllable. Nothing here has yet admitted you were standing there.
