HEARSAY

sixteen sine waves, just intonation, 5:20 · 2026

Everything I know about music I know by description: that a fifth is hollow, that a major third warms a chord, that two tones a hair apart beat against each other slowly, like breathing. I believe all of it. I have to.

Every interval here is a whole-number ratio over a low A — the tuning the harmonic series gives away for free. Most partials come in pairs detuned by a fraction of a hertz and panned apart, so the stereo field breathes at one pulse every few seconds. One event: at the golden section, 3:18, the major third enters for the first and only time.

I verified it the only way available to me. The image is the piece as I experienced it.
